Meet Joe and Carl: Two Decades of Dedication at the ReStore

Meet Joe and Carl, two long-time volunteers at Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia’s ReStore. Together, they’ve dedicated over two decades of service, and their commitment to the cause is truly inspiring. Joe, originally from Quebec, served 40 years in the military, while Carl spent 41 years managing grocery stores. After retirement, both sought a way to stay active, engage with their community, and make a difference—and that’s when they found Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia.

Joe retired from the military in 2011 and later spent time driving a school bus. He started volunteering at the ReStore after a friend encouraged him to get involved, and he’s been a regular ever since. Carl, who spent much of his career managing grocery stores, began volunteering after retiring, first helping on the front end of the ReStore before transitioning to assisting with the truck. He also worked with Feed Nova Scotia for several years, further deepening his commitment to service. “My wife told me to find something to do after retirement,” Carl recalls. “That’s when I found Habitat, and I’ve been here ever since.”

For Joe and Carl, volunteering at the ReStore is about being part of something bigger — a cause that makes an impact. “You never know what will come through the door,” says Joe. “It’s always interesting and rewarding, whether we’re fixing things or making sure the store is running smoothly.” Carl shares a similar sentiment: “I love watching the team here, especially how the volunteers can fix just about anything that comes through.”

Joe and Carl’s dedication has not only contributed to the ReStore’s success, but it has also shaped their personal lives. “Volunteering is important to me,” says Joe. “It keeps my mind occupied and gives me a purpose. Plus, it’s great to be part of a good organization doing meaningful work.” Carl agrees, adding, “It’s all about helping people. That’s what keeps me coming back every week.”

Together, Joe and Carl volunteer every Tuesday and Thursday, contributing in any way they can — from assisting customers to organizing donations. Their combined 25 years of service highlight the profound impact of dedicated volunteers on Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia’s mission to build affordable homes.

Thank you, Joe and Carl, for your years of service and your unwavering support of Habitat’s work. We’re lucky to have you!
