About Us

Our Work

Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia brings communities together to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership.

Our vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live

Habitat for Humanity was established in Halifax in 1992 as Habitat for Humanity Halifax-Dartmouth. In 2011, we became Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia, a provincial affiliate of Habitat for Humanity Canada. Since 1992, we have partnered with families across the province to build more than 75 safe, quality and affordable homes.

Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia is a non-profit organization that develops and advocates for affordable homeownership opportunities. Through the collaborative efforts of volunteers, donors, community partners and Habitat homeowners, we lay the foundation for better, healthier lives in Nova Scotia. Habitat homeowners volunteer 500 hours and pay an affordable, no-down-payment mortgage – geared to their income – to buy their home at fair market value.

Habitat’s model of affordable homeownership bridges a gap for people who face barriers to homeownership and who would otherwise not have an opportunity to buy a home. All Habitat homeowners go through an application process to determine their level of housing need, their ability to repay Habitat’s affordable mortgage and their willingness to partner with Habitat.

As part of the global Habitat for Humanity network, we are one of 46 affiliates in Canada and part of hundreds of affiliates across more than 70 countries. This interconnected network allows us to leverage resources, share best practices and collaborate on projects that have a meaningful impact on housing affordability worldwide.

Our Values

Empowerment

We believe in empowering individuals and families to build better futures through affordable homeownership opportunities.

Partnership

We foster strong partnerships with communities, volunteers and donors to create lasting positive change in the lives of local families.

Inclusiveness

We believe that everyone, regardless of background or circumstance, deserves access to safe and affordable housing.

Community

We are committed to building vibrant and resilient communities where everyone can thrive and fostering a sense of belonging and support.

Transparency

We believe in openly communicating with our partner families, supporters and stakeholders to build trust and accountability.

What We Do

We work to provide a path to affordable homeownership for hardworking families in core housing need across Nova Scotia. We embrace innovation and continuously seek new housing solutions to meet the evolving needs of Nova Scotia’s communities and confront the housing crisis head-on.

Who We Serve

We proudly partner with working families in Nova Scotia who meet our income guidelines, demonstrate the need for adequate housing, have the ability to pay an affordable mortgage and are willing to partner with us. We value inclusivity and welcome families from all backgrounds to join us in building brighter futures and stronger communities.

Where We Build

We build in communities across Nova Scotia. Our projects are strategically planned in areas with significant demand for affordable housing, where housing costs exceed household incomes and where suitable housing options are scarce. We also look for opportunities for partnerships and available land to expand our impact.

From the Homeowners

“Owning our own home means stability for our family, a room for every one of our kids, and the opportunity to get back to a normal life routine.”
